He loved running his own painting business but was struggling to keep up with the paperwork, administrative tasks, and data entry that came with running a service business. As Forrest recalls, “We started with a very basic setup that minimized his paperwork problem; getting his invoicing, client records, and team schedules into an online framework that we quickly realized multiple businesses could benefit from. We knew that a lot of the headaches business owners were feeling were shared between industries (scheduling the unexpected, reacting to problems quickly, drowning in paperwork, inability to grow their business, customer expectations, etc). We discovered that fixing a single process problem for one industry consequently fixed the same problem in 100 other industries. That was our aha moment. It wasn’t just about fixing the problems that one business experienced it was about fixing the entire system in which home service businesses operated in.” We’ve come a long way from our first customer in 2011. Today, we help over 200,000 people like Graham run successful home service businesses. What happened to Graham and Painters Enterprise? Today, Graham has 4 locations in 3 cities and a team of 16. He still uses Jobber today.

The team:

Our Software Engineering team is central to the success of Jobber - focused on creating software that delivers value to tens of thousands of users around the world. This role will sit within our Scheduling team, which is a critical part of Jobber. We call it the “middle of our workflow” — our customers will quote work, then schedule it, then bill it. Scheduling for home services businesses is complicated — our customers need to take into account where the client lives so they can build an efficient route, what equipment may be needed on site, when the client can be home and when the crew member is actually available. As such, this team is central to our entire offering and you will be owning one of the most important parts of the product. 

The role:

Reporting to the Manager, Software Engineering, the Senior Software Developer will collaborate with other Software Engineering members on a scrum team to build an industry-leading product that helps our customers and their small businesses be successful. We’re looking for people who are ready to solve problems that millions of entrepreneurs are facing, using their experience to influence both a product and our team, all the while still working on developing their own craft.

It’s important that you’re a champion of best practices for well-tested, scalable, and well-organized code. In addition, you customize and extend tools and processes to increase the effectiveness of your team, and mentor others to do the same.

What you’ll do at Jobber:

  • Understand how and why our customers work the way they do, so you can develop and improve features in Jobber's online and mobile apps.
  • Be involved in the full life-cycle of a feature, from ideation to delivery and adoption.
  • Participate in code review and testing, while driving engineering solutions to have consistent practices and reusable code.
  • Facilitate group discussions with team members and stakeholders to determine the best solution to our customer's problems.
  • Research, communicate, and advocate for the use of best practices within your team’s domain.
  • Mentor and coach junior teammates, helping them elevate their skills and careers.
  • Breakdown and explain complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.

We’re looking for someone who: 

  • Brings a demonstrated level of senior software engineering experience on a full stack development team (we use Ruby on Rails and React) coupled with experience with the entire software development lifecycle in the Agile/Scrum framework.
  • Has a strong understanding of common full stack frameworks, architectures, technologies and patterns.
  • Has the demonstrated ability to pick up new technologies quickly and hit the ground running.
  • Thrives in a collaborative environment and is driven by impact.
  • Has excellent problem solving skills. You have demonstrated the ability to extract clarity from ambiguity and drive initiatives forward.
  • Has an interest in mentorship and in learning from others.
  • Has an inquisitive mindset and the ability to ask a lot of questions. You seek out new information and remain open to new ideas and perspectives.
