Lead Product Engineer, Sport Industry

Published on February 20, 2024

We believe sport has the power to change lives. That's why we’re on a mission to help 20 million people play sport by 2024. We aim to do this by making it easier for people to access their local sports facilities. Sports facilities all over the world lie idle and unused. At the same time, the managers of these sports facilities are swamped with admin, and are finding it increasingly harder to maximise the use and revenue from their sports facilities. This is why we’ve developed an all-in-one sports facility management and online booking software. Our platform allows sports facilities to be easily booked online and provides the venue with all the tools they need to dramatically reduce their admin and significantly increase their use and revenue.

Do you have a passion for sport? Do you want to grow your career in software development while working in the business of sport? Do you want to lead a team building a ground-breaking product? Are you looking for a company that will invest time in your development, support your professional growth and listen to your ideas?

If the answer is YES, you may have found your dream job, and we may have found our dream hire!

Sports facilities are lying idle during the day all over the world. One reason for this is that people can’t find and book their local sports facilities online.

At SportsKey, we aim to fix this problem by providing easy to use sports facility management and online booking software-as-a-service that makes it simple for venues to manage and promote their sports facilities, resulting in a dramatic reduction in admin and increased revenue for the venue, and more people playing sport.

Our long-term vision is to help the world play more sport. In the short-term, we are on a mission to help 20 million people play sport by 2024.

To achieve this, we need to build an amazing team. That’s where you come in.

The Role

We’re looking for an experienced Ruby on Rails developer to join us as player-coach, taking charge of our small team of engineers while also directly contributing to our product. Expect a roughly 50/50 split between hands-on coding and everything else.

Key responsibilities:

·      Develop and improve new and existing product features, and fix the occasional bug
·      Work with sales and customer success teams to shape upcoming features (and a product manager soon)
·      Define deliverables, estimate timelines and plan development cycles with your team
·      Lead a team of 2-3 engineers in delivering on the agreed scope
·      Regularly review progress and unblock your team members
·      Perform code reviews and mentor less experienced developers

Our stack includes Ruby on Rails 7 with Stimulus/Hotwire, PostgreSQL, Bootstrap, Heroku, Cloudflare, AWS S3, Stripe, GitHub, AppSignal & Mailgun. We collaborate using Basecamp, Trello, Slack, GitHub, and Balsamiq Mockups. We have excellent test coverage and confidently deploy to staging and production multiple times a day.

Requirements

·      Permanently resident in the EU/UK
·      6+ years of experience building full-stack web applications with modern web frameworks and relational databases, at least 3 of those with Ruby on Rails
·      Prior team and project leadership experience in an agile environment
·      A growth mindset and eagerness to learn
·      Ambition to lead and take responsibility for team success
·      Ability to manage your time and communicate clearly and proactively
·      A bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science or a related field is a bonus but not required.
·      A love of Ruby on Rails is a major plus, as is a love for sport!

Remote – Ireland or EU/UK

This is a full-time, permanent position. Most of us are based in Ireland, but this is a fully remote role. We communicate mostly online but try to get together regularly enough for socialising and occasional in-person collaboration. We are accepting applications from anywhere within the EU and UK. Applications from anywhere else will not be considered, sorry.

Our interview process

·      We may invite you to take a quick online Ruby quiz.
·      We follow that with a 30-minute call with Thilo, our CTO, to chat about your experience and our expectations for the role
·      Next is a 90 minute online technical interview to review your core Ruby on Rails knowledge and your proficiency with basic tools
·      If all goes well, we’ll bring you to Dublin for a final full-day technical exercise, followed by meeting some of our team including our founder and CEO before making you an offer.
