Kids spend most of their days in the classroom. And teachers and staff, who play a vital role in their development, are often the first to notice when something is off. But with 1 in 5 young people struggling with mental health, schools are getting crushed by a downward spiral in student crises and staff burnout.
With large increases in federal funding for schools and the rise of telehealth, schools are reimagining what mental health support can look like.
Cartwheel is an early-stage startup building technology-enabled mental health services that put schools at the center. We see our role as supporting on-campus counselors, psychologists, and school social workers who see kids every day. Instead of going around them, we collaborate with them. This means:

ABOUT THE ROLE
As one of Cartwheel’s first Software Engineers, your mission will be to own engineering responsibilities for Cartwheel’s first proprietary experiences as we scale from a pilot program in Massachusetts to a national program serving hundreds of school districts and millions of students. In doing so, you’d lay the foundation for Cartwheel to become the leading partner for schools nationwide in tackling the student mental health crisis.
This role will work closely with the Head of Product and VP of Engineering to conduct user research, ideate, and drive engineering across the product development lifecycle.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
You will work in our Ruby on Rails codebase to deliver high-quality, reliable software for our employees and clients.
- Developing front-end website architecture using hotwire and tailwind.
- Designing user interactions on web pages.
- Developing back-end website applications.
- Ensuring cross-platform optimization for mobile phones.
- Ensuring responsiveness of applications.
- Working alongside graphic designers for web design features.
- Seeing through a project from conception to finished product.
- Designing and developing APIs.
- Meeting both technical and consumer needs.
- Staying abreast of developments in web applications and programming languages.
WHO YOU ARE
- Unshakable desire to work at a rapidly-growing seed stage company
- Love to iteratively deliver beautiful, easy to use experiences
- Enjoy building products from inception to delivery and have a proven track record of delivering products with a measurable business impact
- Comfortable creating your own structure, wrangling stakeholders, and making decisions with imperfect information
- Open-minded, asking and accepting tough questions with grace
- Energetic, optimistic, resilient, and empathetic
- 5+ years of experience with Ruby on Rails
- Accessible design and localization experience is a major plus
- Proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese also a major plus
