The Team
As the Senior Software Engineer at Upstart on the Capital Markets team, you will be focused on developing new features to help scale our business while also maintaining and improving the Capital Markets platform. Everything we do, we do at scale, so having a mindset for performance is important to us. We leverage Rails, React, asynchronous processing, and microservices to process loan sales every day. Our team is highly collaborative and motivated to help keep the business running smoothly. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will also have opportunities to mentor other engineers, help shape the future of the product by architecting our new features, and be key in developing our relationships with our business stakeholders in Capital Markets, Finance, and Data Analytics.
Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote, San Mateo, Columbus, Austin
Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones.
Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions. These occur 3 days per Month/Quarter at the San Mateo, Columbus, Austin office. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.
How you'll make an impact
- Influence our product and technical roadmaps by digging deep with our stakeholders and understanding their needs.
- Contribute to our product and technical roadmaps by owning projects end to end.
- Work closely with product, stakeholders, and other engineering teams to achieve seamless feature releases.
- Mentor junior engineers and promote a culture of technical excellence.
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum requirements:7+ years of professional experience developing backend or full-stack web applications
- Expert in object-oriented programming and design, such as through Python, C#, or Java / JVM
- Master of software development principles and best practices, with deep understanding of creating scalable and maintainable systems, code release, deployment orchestration / rollout mechanisms, logging, instrumentation, monitoring, and alerting in a microservices environment
- Experience with some or many of the following: Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, React, Next.js, Vercel, Python
- Technical leadership experience, with mentorship of more junior engineers and driving technical direction
- History of ownership and accountability for the quality and timely delivery of work
- Demonstrated passion for continuous improvement, with enthusiasm for receiving and incorporating feedback
Preferred qualifications:
- Background in finance / fintech
- Prior experience or demonstrated enthusiasm for working on internal tools
- History of thriving in a variety of work environments: both collaborative and self-directed; remote and in-person
- Experience with cloud compute, services, containerization, continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD)

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
