One day, in August 2013, Michael Back was taking his kids to a baseball game. The kids had their gloves and jerseys and were all ready to go – the kinds of kids that want to get to a 1:05pm game at noon to watch batting practice. But on this day, it wasn’t meant to be.


After searching for parking at a few downtown lots, Michael finally found the only one without a LOT FULL sign and pulled in. But that was only the beginning.


First the operator didn’t have change for cash, so Michael agreed to use credit. Then, the machine didn’t work. After spending the first inning of his Sunday with the boys standing in an underground lot, Michael had had enough. Time is too precious to spend it on things that don’t add value to your life. On that day, Honk was born.

HONK is enabling park operators (municipalities, universities and private) eliminate their physical payment infrastructure and move to digital parking permits. The parking platform we have built addresses the large number of challenges faced by parking operators today. Who we are
We are a team of passionate and pragmatic builders. We like the ideas and principles behind Agile but not rigid structure that often comes along for the ride. We use story points to estimate sprint size and not to measure developer productivity. Everyone checks their ego at the door and is expected to work collaboratively towards the same goal. (Even if that means you complete less story points this sprint because you helped a colleague) 
About you
  • Self-motivated, self disciplined and always improving. Someone that works well with a high level of autonomy and takes ownership of their work.
  • Desire to learn and continue to evolve/improve
  • Comfortable with the traversing the entire stack from database migrations to implementing front-end JS components.
  • Experience building API/applications with Ruby on Rails
Bonus points
  • Experience with building payment processing software
  • Experience with building GraphQL APIs
What you will do
You will join an established team of software engineers with a solid software development lifecycle. We work collaboratively and often will pair program to solve difficult problems. You will help design, architect and building the next generation of our platform. Projects will range from building/scaling Rails APIs, creation of new services and enhancements to our payment processing platform.
