At Unreasonable Group, we believe in the power of business to drive lasting and scalable change. That's why we build community between entrepreneurs, institutions, and investors to profitably solve pressing global problems. Our community of entrepreneurs is shaping trillion-dollar industries and uplifting the lives of more than 750 million people.

We are now growing our two-person engineering team. We’re looking for an experienced tech generalist with a specialization in back-end engineering.

💻 Engineering at Unreasonable
Our team’s mandate is to support the company’s mission with technology in the most impactful way possible. A few of the things we do:
  • Build a private social network for our entrepreneurs
  • Develop internal tools to facilitate our investment team’s support of our ventures
  • Create an online platform for our virtual events
  • Help teammates setup databases for their business initiatives
  • Assist with technical aspects of proposals
  • Manage our public-facing websites
Our stack is mostly a mix of Ruby on Rails and React. Front-ends are Bootstrap v3 (our core community product) and Tailwind v2 (our newer apps). Public-facing websites are a mix of Rails and Tailwind, and a few still on WordPress.

👩🏽‍💻 Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the team to brainstorm, prioritize, architect, and develop our upcoming features and products.
  • Manage the upgrade paths for both Rails and Ruby across all our apps, ensuring that we're taking advantage of the best—and most secure—features that each has to offer.
  • Evaluate the performance of existing features, and propose refactors to better optimize for speed.
  • Manage and optimize Postgres databases
  • Deeply understand our technical infrastructure—we use Heroku for most needs—and ensure that resources are properly allocated and maintained.
  • Maintain AWS security.
  • Write tests using RSpec for new features, and identify opportunities to improve test coverage on existing features.
  • Pair program + code review with other members of the team
  • Identify opportunities within the broader organization where technology might improve efficiency, or better help us to serve our community.
  • Support the broader Unreasonable team with technical advice and support.
  • Other apps that you might often use: Google Cloud (Firestore), GitHub, Sidekiq, Redis, GraphDB, Cloudflare, CodeFactor, FileStack, SendGrid, Stripe, Sqreen.
🏗 Projects You Could Work On
  • Build API integrations with third-party data providers to import and parse fundraising data.
  • Leverage Hotwire to bring real-time interactivity to our community platform (e.g. forum).
  • Ensure our custom platform becomes a thriving platform for our entire global community. This includes features like a Fellowship Forum, our own private AirBnB / couch surfing, a searchable global CRM where any member of our community can connect with any other and easily find the exact person they are looking for, and figure out the best way to "connect the dots" between Fellows, Mentors, Investors, and Corporations in our network.
  • Build a React app for showcasing fundraising ventures to investors in our community.
  • Transition our public websites off of WordPress onto home-grown Rails apps.
  • Develop a platform that will allow us to effectively run a global fund and allow all investors holders to track their investments.
  • Create a digital investment banking platform fit for the future that will allow us to move tens of billions of dollars into entrepreneurs striving to create a more socially just end environmentally regenerative tomorrow.
  • Create a digital platform that allows us to effectively track the impact of all our Fellows and the impact we are having on the multinationals we partner with
😄 Unreasonable may be a good fit if
  • You have substantial back-end engineering experience on real-world products.
  • You’re a manager of one, feel deeply connected to your work, and thrive in ambiguity.
  • You can communicate about complex technical issues and trade-offs effectively—and enjoy doing so.
  • Ruby on Rails is your go-to language because you genuinely love using it.
  • You're comfortable enough with front-end to make your way around React components and basic styling of other components with HTML/CSS (often to be handed off to other team members to polish up).
  • You understand the value of a well-written integration test.
  • You get excited hearing that our stack is a "pretty boring Rails app on Heroku".
  • You have an interest in implementing privacy and security policies across an organization.
  • You love learning and are happiest when bringing new ideas into your everyday work.
  • You’re opinionated about UI design, particularly in favor of Obvious UI.
  • As you read about Unreasonable’s core values, you get more and more excited with each value you come across.
  • You will work primarily within 3 hours of the US Mountain Time Zone (UTC-07:00).
  • You’re not the type of person who says, “That’s not my job."
🤩 We’re particularly excited to hear from you if
  • You have a background or interest in figuring out how to drive investment into under-represented founders.
  • You're part of a thriving online community
  • You have a passion for infosec, and want to help us ensure we're using best practices organization-wide.
  • You know React or Tailwind already or are excited to learn it.
